There are many thoughts, opinions, reactions and forecasts about the 4-day work week — all of which are valid. It really depends on each person’s situation and also what industry they work for. Quite obviously, it won’t work for everyone. Some businesses have 80-hour work weeks already as the norm. For them, this will never be a possibility.
For any kind of job that provides a service, it wouldn’t be realistic either. Mainly because they’re hours are already somewhat limited and we need their services to be open as often as possible. Can you imagine if the banks were closed one more day a week?
But there are those companies/industries that could benefit from the change. I’m a firm believer in this fact. If you don’t think so, check out http://www.theoildrum.com/node/2996 for 16 good reasons to switch. I happen to think it’s a great idea. It’s like in college when you had forty-five minute classes three times a week; there was no time to really get into something because by the time you did, it would be time to leave. That, versus those three hour blocks of class that let you really be able to get to the bottom of something, to really explore it.
The idea is all relative and if you don’t like it, you shouldn’t be forced to have to continue with it. But I certainly think it should be an option, as it can be very beneficial. I like to quote songs, so here is a good one that really pertains to this topic. “…every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”
Sometimes things need to change and this could be a revolutionary start to something. If you think this is truly a great idea for your company, talk to someone about it. Change doesn’t occur without action and you never know who could be on board with it.
