Sites such as Collegeview Collegebaord show that four-year colleges/universities with an enrollment of less than 7,500 students make up 67% of all colleges/universities. Of the smaller colleges/universities, 8% have populations less than 500, 24% have populations between 501 and 2,500, and 35% have populations between 2,501 and 7,500.

As many suggest, the culture of smaller colleges are different than the culture of larger campuses. Often small campuses are theme base (i.e. Faith-Based, Hispanic Servicing, HBCUs, Liberal Arts, Native American, Independent, and Gender Specific Colleges/Universities)

. Further, these types of college campus may find it difficult to hire workers who fit their school’s mission. The challenge to find workers is not directly associated with the theme of these types of schools, but in the arena in which these schools advertise jobs. For instance, we found that these types of schools post jobs on sites with larger institutions which may often have a more familiarly recognized name. This can cause a school to be overlooked and in turn the school’s advertising is costly and ineffective.

Additionally, we interviewed personnel (Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors, and Faculty) from smaller campuses (Public schools, Christian colleges, Liberal Arts colleges, and Historically Black colleges). Below are the key concerns personnel found when advertising jobs on job-posting sites.

• Web based job posting sites are too expensive causing an unequal playing field
• Sites are not cost-effective when having to post jobs for more than two months
• Web based job posting sites do not respond well to culture of smaller colleges/universities
• Job Posting sites that focuses on smaller colleges/universities are not well design
• Job Posting sites that focuses on smaller colleges/universities are often for members of the association posting the jobs
• The number of job seekers on association sites are less than 250 members
