Much of What You Know Just Ain’t So

December 9th, 2008 · No Comments

Miami, FL – For thirty-four years, B. J. Rakow, Ph.D. has been writing corporate training manuals and workbooks as well as conducting workshops on Resume Writing, Interviewing and Networking, Interpersonal Skills, Assertive Behavior and Negotiating.

Now, indefatigable B.J., 80 years young, has just published her new book, Much of What You Know about Job Search Just Ain’t So. Popular job search myths are explored and dispelled and successful strategies offered to replace them.

In the new book, B.J. shares the insights and tactics she has learned and taught others about Job Search during her eclectic career as a clinical psychologist, Executive Coach, career consultant, and corporate marketing executive.

Job search is a serious subject during these serious times but Dr. Rakow uses a humorous approach to help readers assimilate and remember what they read. Her lodestar is the Oscar Wilde quote: “If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they’ll kill you.”

The first chapter contains four simple assessments to help readers understand their personality preferences. Subsequent chapters cover job search in general, resume writing, cover letters, priofile language, positive attitude, communication, body language, networking, interviewing, psychological “laws,” salary negotiating, and advice for older workers.

Each chapter also contains the relevant language, the actual words, that the reader can use to maximize each strategy.

When asked by a reporter why she includes funny stories in such a serious book, B.J. said, “We tend to remember anecdotes, analogies and quotes. And when they are humorous, we often remember them longer.”

The book is available online from Amazon, Books A Million and Barnes and Noble. The latter site also posts a free excerpt of the entire  first chapter with four easy-to-take personality assessments.

Book signings and presentations are being scheduled for 2009. B.J. is currently working on two additional books in the Much of What You Know Just Ain’t So series: Tricky Interviewing Questions, and Stop Managing – Start Leading.
