In this ever tightening job market, some job seekers are resorting to billboard ads and other creative antics to get noticed and hired, however, the most effective method of getting a resume noticed is in “Knowing your Audience” when writing a resume and reflecting that in an effective use of keywords through out the resume and cover letter.
Even though school may be a distant memory for some, it still pays to “do your homework”. “One size fits all” resumes are no longer effective. With the competition mounting for a shrinking pool of jobs, only resumes properly tailored for a specific company, culture and position will receive consideration.
“There are several basic elements necessary to most effectively tailor one’s resume”, states Dominique Koukol, Author of Job Seekers Gold: What Savvy Job Seekers Know about Resumes.
“First understand the business of the company and specifically the division’s role within that company. Ask yourself: How does the position being applied for contribute to the overall purpose and success of the company? Other questions to ask during research is what part of the business cycle is the company in and what is the corporate culture? These elements can be found by reading areas of the company’s web site such as the annual report, media releases, mission and vision statements and customer links.”
The answers to these questions all indicate specific skill sets and behavioral attributes best suited for the job. Another way to understand the company’s behavioral attributes relates to the position posting itself as well as the company’s culture. For example, some jobs would require an ability to take command and make critical decisions, such as an emergency room nurse, while others may emphasize an approachable and friendly nature such as a customer service representative.
The company culture can also be researched in how they brand themselves or present themselves to the public and their customer base. Is the company known for excellence and quality or cost-savings and efficiency?
So, though billboards may get one noticed, it still takes a savvy demonstration of an understanding of the company’s needs and culture to land an interview…… so save the billboard budget for a marriage proposal…..it will probably give a better return on investment.
